Reclaiming Our Shared Ground: The Path to True Freedom in Ontario
If you strip away the partisan labels and look past the red, blue, or orange signs on the lawn, you find a fundamental truth about everyone living in this province.
Whether we are in downtown Toronto or rural Northern Ontario, we share a common desire: the need to have control over our own lives.
We all want the opportunity to build a life for ourselves and our families. We all want our rights upheld. Deep down, the vast majority of Ontarians simply want the freedom to make their own choices without unnecessary hurdles.
The political divide often tells us our neighbours are the problem. However, the reality is that the only true enemies of a free society are those who choose to restrict the rights of others. These are the people who believe their rights, or their vision for society, are more important than yours.
The Illusion of the Select Few
For far too long, a narrative has been pushed upon us that the only way to preserve our rights is to hand them over to a select few. We have been told that safety comes from surrender.
Unfortunately, history has shown us the flaw in this logic. Those select few have utilized the systems that provide them authority to build structures that insulate them from consequence. We have created a class of governance that sits outside the reach of actual accountability.
Consider the pattern we see in elected office. When a policy fails, how often do we hear an admission of a mistake? Almost never. Rather than reversing poor decisions, the standard operating procedure is to blame external factors or political opponents. Then they double down by throwing new policies on top of the old, broken ones in a desperate attempt to steer reality. This refusal to pivot always comes at a high cost, paid for by the taxpayer and the individual citizen.
True Protection is Minimal Interference
We need to shift our perspective on what protection looks like. True protection of rights does not come from more oversight; it comes from minimal interference. This applies not only to government interference in our lives but also to how we interact with one another.
There are, of course, regions in the world with far fewer liberties than Ontario. However, pointing to them is a deflection. The existence of oppression elsewhere does not justify the subtle, creeping interference with individual rights happening right here at home.
The Fix: Evolution Not Chaos
So how do we fix a system that was constructed from its very inception to maintain authority over individuals for the benefit of the governing few?
Realistically, we cannot and should not simply dismantle the system overnight. The shock would be too great, and too many people rely on current structures for their survival. Radical, chaotic change leaves people behind.
Instead, the solution lies in working from within. We need a gradual, systematic rewriting and redesigning of our governance. We must peel back the layers of overreach one by one to allow for a smooth transition toward actual freedom. We need to replace mechanisms of control with mechanisms of empowerment.
The Blessing of Responsibility
The biggest barrier to this transition is fear. Specifically, it is the fear of personal responsibility.
The current system has a vested interest in making you afraid of autonomy. It benefits from the narrative that you cannot manage without its heavy hand. Yet individual freedom and personal responsibility are two sides of the same coin. You cannot have one without the other.
We should not view personal responsibility as a burden to be feared. It is a blessing. It is the ability to own your successes, learn from your failures, and chart your own course.
Personal responsibility is not dangerous; it is the hallmark of dignity.
It is the mark of true freedom.

Understanding Libertarianism: A Modern Perspective
As Libertarians, we explore a rich tapestry of political ideas. This contemporary manifestation of liberalism draws inspiration from the revolutionary movements that emerged in the 18th through 20th centuries. Libertarianism stands against various forms of oppression, from absolute monarchies and imperialism to governmental overreach and censorship.
The philosophy champions individual freedom and autonomy, advocating for minimal government intervention in personal and economic matters.
It is a call to maintain personal liberties and challenge any authority that seeks to impose control over the individual.
Through understanding Libertarianism, we embrace a legacy of fighting for rights that empower people to live free from oppression.

Ontario Libertarian Party Platform:
The “Freedom of Choice” Platform, 2025
"I believe that Principles Matter when considering how public policies affect Ontario’s citizens, and that Freedom of Choice for every citizen defines a true democracy.
Libertarians have been known for half a century as Champions of Democracy by our unwavering defence of Individual Property Rights and our commitment to Do No Harm to our fellow citizens.
Good principles for public governance transcend political partisanship and rightly belong to every citizen. The following Four Principles for Civil Society have inspired my vision for a unified and prosperous Ontario.
- INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM – This refers to the Freedoms of Choice for all citizens as laid out in Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
- PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY refers to the idea that, with Freedom, comes the Responsibility to do no harm to others, just as you expect them to do no harm to you.
- RESPECT must be mutual. Genuine respect is earned and cannot be coerced by force. If public leaders want respect from our citizens, then they must also demonstrate their respect for us.
- FAIRNESS in this context refers to the dispensation of justice to be equally applied to everyone under unbiased laws, regulations and their enforcement.
As Leader of the Ontario Libertarian Party, I lead with these principles in mind. The platform planks that follow demonstrate my commitment to those ideals.
By supporting us, you too will demonstrate your agreement that these values offer excellent guideposts for a united and prosperous Ontario."
